This Gift Shop is an examination of contemporary art museum practices. It holds and displays selections from a growing archive of re-digitised receipts. Each section presents thematics and reflections on gifting as a method in secular art encounters, that may flow in confluence or diffluence with inquiries on Islamic sensibilities.
I have retained these receipts since April, when I finally arrived in Cape Town to join the 2024 cohort of Museum Fellows in the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) and University of the Western Cape (UWC) Museum Fellowship Programme.
Here, the slips do not only signify the value of things obtained; they symbolise gifts received and gifts to come.
